RAM Uni-Conn Snap In Holder for Octagon Button

Delivery time: 5-7 business days -- this is a special order item from RAM Mounts. If we already have it in stock, you can pick it up the same day at RoboCenter Svedala.

A simple, purely mechanical snap-in connector that gives a GDS Uni-Conn-equipped device a secure landing zone -- on a RAM ball arm, or bolted directly, low-profile, to a flat surface. This is not a charging dock; it is the passive half of the Uni-Conn family, for anywhere a device just needs to be held securely rather than charged.

Features

  • Holder designed for devices with the GDS Uni-Conn button adapter installed
  • Mounts on a RAM C-size ball and socket arm for adjustable positioning, or directly to a flat surface for a fixed, low-profile installation
  • RAM Mounts Compatible
  • High-strength composite construction for reliability in demanding environments
  • Backed by a 3-year warranty

How GDS Uni-Conn works

GDS Uni-Conn is RAM's universal snap-in docking system, built around three separate pieces that work together. First, a rugged IntelliSkin protective case (sold separately, one per device model) wraps the tablet or phone and protects it. Second, a small octagon-shaped button adapter -- the actual RAM-GDS-U1U part -- snaps onto the back of that IntelliSkin case before the device is first put into service. Third, that button adapter is what physically docks: it is the part that clicks, locks, or snaps into every Uni-Conn holder, desktop dock, or vehicle dock in the RAM catalog, this product included.

The connection itself is the clever part. Instead of a cable that gets plugged and unplugged dozens of times a day -- wearing out the device's own charging port and collecting dirt and moisture in the process -- the button adapter presents a set of ruggedized pogo-pin contacts. Docking is a single push; undocking is a lever, button, or key-turn away. The device's own port is never touched, so it never wears out from docking and undocking.

The future-proofing is the real payoff. Every IntelliSkin case is built with its button adapter at the same fixed alignment point, so any Uni-Conn-equipped device docks into any Uni-Conn dock, holder, or clip -- regardless of which tablet or phone model it actually is. When a fleet upgrades to a new device, the vehicle dock, the desktop dock, and the belt clip bolted to the wall or the cab do not need to be replaced. Only a new IntelliSkin case (with its own button adapter) is needed for the new device -- the docking infrastructure itself is bought once.

A note on RAM ball sizes

Some Uni-Conn products (this one included, where noted below) also mount on a conventional RAM ball-and-socket arm to reach a windshield, dash, or roll bar. RAM uses five ball sizes rated for different duty classes: B Size (part numbers starting RAM-B-...) is the standard-duty size for phones and light tablets; C Size (plain RAM-... part numbers, no letter prefix) is heavy duty, recommended for larger tablets and anything mounted somewhere that sees constant vibration -- exactly the case in a tractor, ATV, or UTV cab. Every RAM arm is designed to be tightened by hand only, with no torque spec, so the mount can be repositioned in the field without tools.

Important: this is a passive holder, not a charging dock

The RAM-HOL-U1U has no electrical contacts of its own -- it simply grips the device's Uni-Conn button adapter mechanically. If you need the device to charge while parked in the holder, choose the GDS Desktop Dock or the GDS Uni-Conn vehicle dock instead. This holder is the right choice when a device just needs a secure, no-fuss place to sit between uses -- for example a passenger-side landing zone in a cab, or a fixed spot on a workbench.

Frequently asked questions

What is this holder actually for?
It gives a Uni-Conn-equipped tablet or phone a second, passive place to be secured -- separate from wherever it charges. Many fleets use one of these plus a charging dock: the dock for overnight charging, this holder for a secure spot during the day.

Does it charge the device?
No. It has no electrical contacts -- it is a purely mechanical snap-in holder. For charging, use the GDS Desktop Dock or the GDS Uni-Conn vehicle dock instead.

What else do I need to make this work?
An IntelliSkin protective case for your specific tablet or phone model, with a GDS Uni-Conn button adapter (RAM-GDS-U1U) installed on its back. Neither is included with this product. RoboService does not yet stock every device-specific IntelliSkin case in our own webshop -- contact us with your exact device model and we will check compatibility and order the matching case for you.

Can I mount it on a RAM ball arm?
Yes. The holder accepts a C-size RAM ball base (such as the RAM Diamond Ball Base) for a fully adjustable ball-and-socket mount -- the ball base itself is sold separately. Alternatively, the included AMPS hardware lets you skip the ball entirely and bolt the holder directly to a flat surface for a fixed, low-profile installation.

What happens when I upgrade my tablet?
This is the whole point of the system. You only replace the IntelliSkin case (with its own Uni-Conn button adapter) for the new device model -- the dock, holder, or clip bolted into the vehicle, desk, or belt stays exactly where it is and keeps working, because every IntelliSkin case aligns its button adapter to the same fixed docking point.

Does mounting hardware come included?
Yes, for the direct, low-profile installation: two #8-32 x 7/8" machine screws and two #8-32 nuts are included. If you choose the RAM ball option instead, the ball base and its own hardware are sold separately.

Is it lockable?
No, this is a simple friction snap-in holder without a lock. If theft deterrence matters for your application, look at the GDS Uni-Conn vehicle dock instead, which includes a key lock.
