Why SLAM is the underground method

Total stations need line of sight and setups; GNSS needs sky. A SLAM scanner needs neither - it recognises the surroundings and builds the model as you walk.

Cross-sections and as-built control

FJD Trion Model generates vertical and horizontal cross-sections from the point cloud - compare the profile against the design, document overbreak and underbreak, and check clearances before installation.

Volumes without a survey crew

Stockpiles, faces and excavations are measured in the model instead of on site. Rescan the same area later and you have the change between two dates.

Documentation that survives the shift

The scan is a complete record of how it looked on that day - useful for handover, disputes, insurance and the next contractor. Nothing has to be re-measured because someone forgot a dimension.

Send the scanner where people should not go

The Trion accessory range includes a robot dog mount, developed for automatic scanning and inspection in demanding environments - construction sites, disaster areas and underground facilities. Combined with the extension pole and backpack, the scanner reaches places a survey crew cannot safely stand.

The robot dog itself is not part of our range - we supply the scanner, the mount and the workflow.

How an underground survey runs

1. Planning

We agree the extent, what has to be documented and how the result should be delivered.

2. Walk-through

Walk the drift or the space with the scanner. The point cloud builds live on the tablet, so gaps are caught before you leave.

3. Processing

Trion Model classifies, generates cross-sections and calculates volumes and areas from the model.

4. Delivery

LAS point clouds, sections, volume reports and 3D models - into your CAD, BIM or mine planning software.

Frequently asked questions

Does it really work without any GPS signal?

Yes. SLAM builds the position from LiDAR and IMU data by recognising the surroundings. GNSS is only needed if the result must sit in national coordinates - and then you tie in at the portal. The FJD Trion V100F is purpose-built for exactly that transition zone - from GNSS-free measurement to national coordinates at the portal - holding centimetre-level accuracy for over 10 minutes along the way.

Is light required?

The LiDAR measures with its own laser and works in complete darkness. The cameras that colour the point cloud do need light, so in an unlit space you get geometry without photo colour.

How long can we scan on one charge?

The S2 series runs about 3 hours on two batteries, the P2 up to 4 hours. Batteries are swapped in the field.

Which scanner suits mining best?

The S2Max for large open spaces thanks to its 300 m range, the S2Pro where dense detail matters, and the P2 when weight and tight passages decide.

Can we calculate volumes from the scan?

Yes - volumes, areas, distances and cross-sections are measured in Trion Model, and two scans of the same area give you the change over time.

Do you have a Swedish reference in mining?

Not yet - we are open about that. The technology is proven in tunnels and underground facilities internationally, and we are looking for the first Swedish site. Contact us if you want to be it, on favourable terms.
