FJDynamics launches the Rough Ranger - the new generation of the RM21

FJDynamics is rolling out the RM21P under the marketing name Rough Ranger - the new generation of the proven RM21 robotic mower platform. In Sweden the machine is also known by its local nickname: Ruffklipparen. We at RoboService have already taken the new generation for its first run, and here is what actually changed.

One machine, three names

RM21P is the model designation, Rough Ranger is the international marketing name from FJDynamics, and Ruffklipparen is the Swedish nickname. It is the same machine - so if you have heard any of the three names, you are in the right place.

What is actually new

The biggest change sits at the front. The old RM21 front was rigid, and on undulating ground the robot could end up with only three wheels touching the turf. The RM21P front is mechanically mounted on bearings and follows the terrain, and the cutting deck is now spring-loaded and more firmly mounted - together they give a clearly more even cut.

Second: battery swaps. The rear cover is fastened with two rubber latches - open it, swap the two 2 kWh batteries and keep mowing. A swap takes a couple of minutes without tools, so with a spare set the machine can run around the clock. The batteries are the same as in the RM21 and RCM01, so a mixed FJD fleet shares spares freely.

On top of that: the inside of the body is easier to reach for service, and the charging port has moved to the centre of the rear, which makes the cable for the external charger easier to connect.

The rotor still sets it apart

Like the RM21, the Rough Ranger cuts with a 63 cm metal rotor rather than small razor blades on spinning discs. The rotor creates a suction effect that lifts the grass upright before cutting - a cleaner cut from 20 mm sports turf all the way up to 120 mm rough. It covers up to 93,600 m² per 72 hours – 108,000 m² with fast charging, handles slopes up to 20 degrees (25 with double rear wheels), and fast charges in 3 hours.

What happens to the RM21?

The RM21P is what we sell today. The RM21 can still be ordered with a longer lead time, and every RM21 in the field is fully supported - including the RoboService certification course for operators. Think of it like a phone generation shift: same family, new standard.

In stock - see it in action

We have the RM21P in stock with immediate delivery, and demos are coming shortly. Having driven it ourselves, the impression is clear: many small improvements that together lift the whole machine. Contact RoboService to be first in line when we show the Rough Ranger near you.
